Blondshell is Back: 'What's Fair' Review

Reviews | 21st August 2024

Blondshell, the singer-songwriter, sauntered onto the indie music scene in 2022 with her first single Olympus and has since released her dazzling debut album, ‘Blondshell’, in April 2023– undoubtedly one of the best albums of that year.

To fan’s relief, she has recently released a new single, ‘What’s Fair’– hopefully the first single from an upcoming second album. Released on the 21st August 2024, ‘What’s Fair’ is an honest exploration of Blondshell’s complicated relationship with her mother; her attempt at trying to unravel this and establish what is a normal or ‘fair’ way for a parent to act. Despite the subject being the mellow opening of old wounds, it is an upbeat song with a nod to nineties alternative rock with distorted guitars and her vocals being comparable to Hole’s icon, Courtney Love. The song has both lyrics that are introspective and raw, holding nothing back, and a melody that is catchy with the ability to get trapped into your memory: ‘what’s fair / what’s a fair assessment of the job you / do you ever even regret it?’

With such a knock-out debut album, you can’t help but wonder what can possibly be improved, but ‘What’s Fair’ is Blondshell’s way of showing you that it is only the beginning for her and her revival of nineties rock.
